The foodservice industry forecast was adjusted downward for 2009 based on declining sales and the prospect of a slow economic rebound. Efficiencies and support for operators’ bottom line remains critical. The overall foodservice forecast calls for a sales decline of -2.2%, and a real decline of -4.6%. Overall restaurant sales are expected to decline -2.6% and overall “beyond restaurant” sales are expected to decline -1.5%. Forecasting in the economic environment remains difficult—economic stimulus initiatives may impact sales and unemployment begin to stabilize.
